The four dialing modes
| Mode | How it dials | Agent waits? | Customer waits? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Predictive | Several numbers per agent, timed by an algorithm that predicts when agents will be free | Least | Sometimes | Large B2C lists, short calls |
| Power | A fixed number of lines per agent | Little | Sometimes | Mid-size lists |
| Progressive | One number, only when an agent is free | Some | No | Small teams, quality-sensitive calls |
| Preview | Agent reviews the record, then dials | Most | No | B2B, collections, complex calls |
How to choose
- List size and contact rate. Big lists with low answer rates benefit most from predictive dialing.
- Call value and complexity. High-value or complex calls suit preview dialing.
- Customer experience. If a customer must never hear silence after answering, use progressive or preview.
- Team size. Predictive dialing works best with enough agents (typically 10 or more) for the prediction to be accurate.
- Use more than one mode. Most modern dialers let you set the mode per campaign.
Compliance in India
Outbound telemarketing must follow TRAI’s commercial communication regulations: respect the customer’s DND preferences, call through registered channels and keep abandoned calls to a minimum.

Frequently asked questions
Which dialer gives the most agent talk time?
A predictive dialer, because it dials several numbers per agent and only passes answered calls, removing ringing, busy and no-answer time from the agent's day.
What is the downside of predictive dialing?
If more people answer than there are free agents, some calls are dropped or kept waiting (abandoned calls). The dialing ratio must be tuned to keep abandonment low.
When is a preview dialer better?
When each call needs preparation — B2B sales, collections, account management or complex support — because the agent sees the record before calling.
What is a power dialer?
A power dialer dials a fixed number of lines per agent (for example 2 or 3) without prediction. It sits between progressive and predictive dialing.
